General steps to take if printer isn’t recognising the cartridge

Is your printer not detecting your new ink or toner cartridge? This is a very common experience for customers and definitely, you aren’t alone!

A printer not recognising a new cartridge comes under common issues, occurring especially when changing or replacing an empty one, irrespective of the brand of the printer you have.  In such a case, your printer may say ‘toner isn’t compatible’, ‘printer cartridge not detected’, ‘no cartridge installed’ or warning lights may flash on your printer.

Following are the different steps you may take when your printer isn’t detecting cartridge:-

  • Protective strips – You must check if you have removed protective covers or plastic strips that are attached to a new cartridge when you first take it out of its packaging. If you haven’t, the printer will definitely fail to register the new cartridge and this will cause you problems.

  • Firmware – Modern printers have a tendency to automatically connect to the internet but PC software or internal printer software, most of the times, require updates. These updates often fix the issue.

  • Damaged contacts – New ink and toner cartridges have a number of metal contacts, which are connected to similar metal contacts allowing them to communicate with the printer. Dirt or damage can prevent them from making good connections.

  • Internal memory reset - Printers often automatically recognise when you install a new cartridge and reset its internal memory. It ensures that it is displaying full ink and toner levels. However, a number of times printer is unable to do it correctly and believes that the old one or no cartridge is currently inserted instead.

  • Incorrect consumable installed – It’s very rare to happen but still can. In case, a drum or fuser or other maintenance item was accidentally purchased instead of a toner or ink cartridge, the printer wouldn’t work and will still require a new ink or toner cartridge.

  • Incorrect installation – There can be a chance that an ink cartridge wasn’t fully clicked into its slot and therefore, the printer isn’t able to detect it and displays an error message. To fix it, lift your cartridge cover and check all the inserted cartridges to be sure that they have been completely clicked in. Close the cover and try once more.
